New York DMV Written Test: Questions, Passing Score & Requirements

Last updated , checked against official DMV sources.

In New York you pass the DMV written permit test to get a learner permit. The test is short, but you must also get enough road-sign questions right.

Test format

The test is the same whether you are under 18 or an adult.

All ages
20questions
14correct to pass
70%passing score

You must also answer at least 2 of the 4 road-sign questions correctly.

Minimum age for a learner permit: 16. Our app's exam simulation follows this format for both age groups.

Requirements by age

Under 18

  • You can get a learner permit from age 16. Students at participating high schools can take the test there from age 15 and 11 months.
  • If you are under 18, you can take the permit test online. After passing, book an appointment at a DMV office. DMV needs three business days to review your results and documents; if you visit sooner, you must retake the test in the office.
  • Junior permit holders have limits on when and with whom they can drive, depending on the region.

18 and older

  • You take the permit test at a DMV office, on a touch-screen station or on paper.

Taking the test

  • The test is offered in 20 languages, including English, Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Korean and Arabic.
  • You need 20/40 vision in at least one eye, with or without glasses.
  • Bring proofs of identity worth at least six points (one must show your signature), proof of age and your Social Security number.
  • The permit fee depends on your age and where you live. See the DMV fee chart for your amount.

What the test covers

Questions come from the official New York driver handbook: road signs and markings, right-of-way, speed and following distance, safe driving habits, and alcohol and drug laws. Our course covers it in 30 video lessons. These are free on the website:
