Texas DPS Written Test: Questions, Passing Score & Requirements

Last updated , checked against official DPS sources.

In Texas you take the written knowledge test from the Department of Public Safety (DPS) to get a learner license. The test itself is the same for teens and adults, but the steps before it depend on your age.

Test format

The test is the same whether you are under 18 or an adult.

Minimum age for a learner license: 15. Our app's exam simulation follows this format for both age groups.

Requirements by age

Under 18

  • You can apply for a learner license from age 15 to 17.
  • Before applying, complete the classroom part of driver education: 6 hours with the concurrent method or 24 hours with the block method.
  • Bring a high school diploma, GED or a completed Verification of Enrollment and Attendance (VOE) form.
  • If you passed the knowledge test during the classroom part of driver education, bring proof. Otherwise you take it at the driver license office when you apply.
  • The learner license costs $16 and expires on your 18th birthday.

18 and older

  • If you are 18 to 24, you must complete a 6-hour adult driver education course before testing for a license.
  • Drivers 18 to 24 also need the 1-hour Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD) video. Its certificate is valid for 90 days.
  • If you are 25 or older, the adult driver education course is not required.
  • A new Class C driver license costs $33 for ages 18 to 84 and is valid for eight years.

Taking the test

  • DPS offers the knowledge test in English or Spanish.
  • If you do not pass, your application is held at the driver license office for 90 days. After 90 days or three failed tests, you must submit a new application and pay the fee again.

What the test covers

Questions come from the official Texas driver handbook: road signs and markings, right-of-way, speed and following distance, safe driving habits, and alcohol and drug laws. Our course covers it in 33 video lessons. These are free on the website:
